GAPS focuses on the effect that gastrointestinal health has on neurological health by removing difficult to digest polysaccharides and di saccharides (types of sugar) from the diet. These undigested sugars encourage overgrowth of opportunistic bacteria, yeasts, viruses and parasites thereby resulting in gastrointestinal inflammation.
GAPS diet promotes the intake of fermented food and is gluten and casein free. Specific foods such as collagen and mineral rich meat broths are used to heal and soothe the gut wall. The diet was moulded off the specific carbohydrate diet (SCD) and is often used in combination with the body ecology diet (BED).
