Leaky Gut Syndrome (LGS) is a condition of increased permeability between the mucosal cells that line the gastrointestinal tract.  Normally these cells are very tightly “knit” together.  In the case of LGS, microscopic gaps form between them allowing larger molecules of partially digested food and bacteria, yeasts and toxins to pass into the blood stream.  Absorption of these substances can lead to immune dysfunction, mood disturbances, behaviour problems and nutrient deficiencies.

LGS results from gut irritation or inflammation which can be caused by:

  • a microbial imbalance in the gut (called dysbiosis)
  • yeast infections such as Candida
  • viral infections such as measles
  • a number of medications
  • stress
  • the presence of heavy metals or
  • a reduction in PST (phenol-sulphur-transferase), a substance that lines and protects the gut wall from becoming leaky

Specific herbs, nutrients, diet and fermented foods are very effective in treating LGS.
