The bio-medical approach to treating autism spectrum disorder’s (ASD’s) is based on treatments that resolve the underlying metabolic, immune and digestive issues that give rise to the symptoms of these disorders. Which treatments are used is decided from a range of pathology tests performed on blood, hair, urine and faeces as well as gene testing.
There are five key principals to the biomedical approach to autism, ASD’s and gut-immune-neurological disorders. They are:
- dietary intervention
- digestive tract healing
- nutritional medicine
- detoxification
- neuro-developmental and behavioural therapies
Three primary tools in the biomedical approach are:
- Dietary Intervention – The cornerstone of any treatment, dietary intervention can bring about rapid improvements. Working with diet offers a drug-free approach to the treatment of gut-immune-brain disorders. It also builds the very important foundations on which medical treatment can be given in a safer, more effective manner.
- Nutritional Medicine – Addresses body chemistry to balance vitamin, mineral and amino acid profiles that affect neurological, digestive and immune function. Heavy metal detoxification is also an important aspect.
- Herbal Medicine – Addresses oxidation and infection and supports organ and system function, promoting the body’s ability to heal.
Behavioural and neurodevelopmental therapies are also essential for children with ASD to help improve motor skills, social skills and cognitive function.
